Here’s an interesting video I came across that depicts some of the perceived problems with Starcraft 2. I agree with a few but not all of them. Take a look:

I just read your comment on my SC2 blog, I’ll add your link tonight

oh btw on your contact page, I can’t see the challenge question.

I’d have to disagree with a lot of what this guy says (though not all). Blizzard, if you’re gonna consider this guy’s argument, make sure you consider SC fans’ responses to this vid too.

Exenxe on 11 October, 2007 at 12:58 pm #

Hmm.. The only thing I agree on this video was the voice of the new protoss unit, the Stalker, sounded like voice from that of the krypt Fiend. (at first hearing the voice of the Stalker on the original Sc2 site did reminded me of somthing from warcraft, this video made it clear for me) Also, Blizzard hardly would make such a game with flaws. Not likely and never will. One thing to note to this video maker, “Its STARCRAFT 2

Starcraft_freak on 27 October, 2007 at 11:59 am #

That video really pisses me off the reason for more powerful ships(mothership) is because it requires more of a challenge to overcome which is what I look for in games is a CHALLENGE SC ORIGINAL was way too ez to beat. Oh and as far as cant find unit it’s called hotkeying my god how many people are noobs???? The one thing I agree with is that the buildings do take up to much and that blizzard needs to get a tech support that actually responds. Oh and as if I haven’t pointed out enough the time has changed the story line doesn’t pick off exactly where it left off, so of course units will look different. I mean cmon people would you look the same after so many years??? This video has some good point but overall it really ticks me off.

Starcraft_freak I completely agree.
Starcraft 2 is hot end of story.
I really do want the blackhole abillity
for the Mothership though!

Starcraft_freak on 15 December, 2007 at 10:46 am #

Ty Kyro at least someone sees it. Anyway does anyone know where to dl the actual beta??? If you do plz email me at halomn@yahoo.com Much appreciated!

Starcraft_freak on 15 December, 2007 at 10:53 am #

Hi its me again if you look at the zlots at 1:49 closely you will see sc they had the little “hats” you might say. THEY STILL HAD THEM the only reason you didnt see them was because you were too busy fighting or for this guys case being a nooblet. (sorry for the apparent anger) Graphics problems are another factor 9 years back graphics aren’t like they are today that is why they made them visible now. AND PLEASE IF YOU CRITICIZE THIS GAME CRITICIZE IT GOOD AND CHECK YOUR WORK or I’ll end up posting comments like this one. Thank You for your time.

Starcraft_freak on 15 December, 2007 at 10:56 am #

Sorry forgot to tell you if you have any questions or comments about SC2 email me at halomn@yahoo.com and I will email you back with an answer as soon as possible(at least faster than Blizzard does.)

The movie was… umm… interesting… I did agree that the bunker looks different but it not really that bad. Over all though, I agree with the things he/sh2 liked but i disagree with just about ever bad thing he says.

Northernblades on 9 January, 2008 at 11:35 am #

Well. A few things you said have relevance. But I have a vry different list of grievances.

First of. I dislike Warcraft 3. for all the reasons that will be passed to starcraft? poorly Identifyable units. Maybe I am getting old and blind, or not learning as quickly, but I have to click some units in WC3 to find out what they are. They are “fuzzy” over animated, over 3d effected, small, and un unique. I pray that SC2 will not make this mistake. to the point where micro in WC3 was pointless. more bigger units, with a better used hero.

You said that starcraft was not a game of paper rock scisors. I say it is, and hope it stays that way, “a place for everything, and everything in its’ place. the bunker was the best photo of how fuzzy, unclear, and over worked the gfx are in this game.

as for the thor…. give it to another race, give them a chance to bring down terrans overpowered over emphasided static defence.

terran had the most absurd D in the game, and the most powerfull defence crusher in the game. do they need more defence, and more defence crushing power?

I know it is not trend but K.I.S.S.

Good job whoever made this. I agree with almost all of your points made. For example: Starcraft wasn’t meant to have “superunits”. The battlecruiser and carrier were one of the best, and those too were meant to be massed. I think Starcraft_freak is confusing starcraft 1 with a singleplayer-focused game. There are leagues of gamers earning six-figures playing this game. It’s a sport. The singleplayer is the least-lasting aspect of Starcraft.

And rock-paper-scissors was not part of starcraft. Sure some ground units couldn’t attack air and vice versa, but nothing was meant to be completely useless against anything else. You could overwhelm zealots with zerglings (if they weren’t on a ramp) and there was no specific counter to anything. Sure missile turrets were good against air, but they couldn’t really stand up to a bunch of air units. They were meant more as detection.

Also, as many people say, there should be change in the game. What the devs said more or less was that they wanted to stay true to the starcraft formula. So far, they aren’t doing it very well. All in all, I don’t mind the change of color and style, but they are seriously ignoring some fundamental issues (some of which were brought up in this game).
So far, I would only give this game a 7/10 because of the plain fact that it is not going to be enjoyable enough to play even for 2 years.

Starcraft_freak, if you’re going to comment on someone’s video that they took the time to make, comment “well”. Be courteous and try not to sound like a complete 13 year old idiot.

If you guys want to even start to understand the complexity of starcraft and to actually know what your talking about, then play bnet for a year or just with your friends. Starcraft isn’t meant to be one of those play-a-bit-and-throw-away games. It’s meant to be lasting. Starcraft 1 has been out for around 9 years, and yet there are still pro-gamers for it. Forgive my condescending tone, but very few of you know anything about starcraft.

hey i think it doesnt really matter leave it how it is just give us a editor to change it around if necessary

It all looks and sounds great to me. The Terran buildings don’t look bad, if you don’t know how to “find the SCV” then you are a moron - especially since you could assign each group of attackers into groups for easy finding. The flow of combat looks a million times more fluid than SC 1, the new units are very interesting and having one super unit is not something that will ruin the game. It just requires a smart counter. From what I understand it eats up enough resources that not everyone will want to get it - especially once enemies find good ways to take it out fast. I hate how any change made is considered evil, it NEEDS to change.

Frankly, I say that if you are judging a game, pointing out its flaws and boons before the game has come out– heck, even before there’s a perceivable release date– you’re a plain fool.

Who’s to declare what belongs and doesn’t belong in the Starcraft Universe other than the Starcraft team? That’s like telling God that the platypus doesn’t belong on earth, to give a comparison.

Just because War of the Worlds had a walker that did those sorts of attacks doesn’t mean that the concept is forevermore a rip-off. Heck, Ender’s Game displayed the internet and virtual reality before those came into being. Does the credit for the internet and virtual reality belong to Orson Scott Card? No, but it goes to show that intelligent people know a good marketable idea when they see one.

Furthermore, if you’re one to argue the inclusion of a certain unit, whether it be infantry or super-ship, then wait until you’ve used or fought one. Fact is, when the Mothership flies on, all it will take is a good handful of Phoenixes or Vikings to remove it. It’s strong, but it’s not invincible.

Now, I will not deny that there are valid points in this video and in the comments of viewers, but here is a list of insignificant complaints:
The Zealots look like ninjas
The tanks look like toys
The Terran structures aren’t shiny enough
The Stalker voice sounds like a WC3 voice
The Marines look like Footmen
The Ghosts look silly
The Colossus is too big
If these factors are enough to affect your personal level of gameplay enjoyment, then what on Earth are you judging a game for anyway? When these factors ruin your gameplay, you clearly are not a serious player. These factors are tiny, ignorable, and plain unimportant.

I’m a fan of Starcraft. I’m not very good at it, I’ll admit, but I love it. While I may not be pro, I still claim the right to defend a game that’s respectably inching its way through balancing and fluidity and other perfectionisms. Don’t judge a game that isn’t out, that you haven’t played, and that you can’t predict when it will be available.

afterdeath on 12 May, 2008 at 7:58 am #

Stop hating on the guy. He is trying to be critical. That is a GOOD thing.

“Who’s to declare what belongs and doesn’t belong in the Starcraft Universe other than the Starcraft team” — uh, the fans? The people who will be buying the game? We’re all concerned because we loved SC and BW and we’ve been waiting for SC2 for like 10 years, and it better kick ass.

What I liked the most in SC and BW was gameplay. Yeah the graphics weren’t crazy, but at least they didn’t get on the way of the gameplay either. My major concern with SC2 is that it may have TOO MUCH crap (fancy graphics, too many units with too many abilities, etc.) that gameplay will actually suck. But I really hope it doesn’t.

That, however, cannot be judged based upon one unit, ability, etc., but it’s a collection of it all. So all I can do is cross my fingers and hope that the complete package makes us all happy.

I do have to agree with the easily distinguishable units argument. It would be very annoying if massive fights turn into one huge blur of cloud and blue lasers everywhere.
